ABUAD: Knowing Team SCORA...What, Who &Why?

     

The last general assembly of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA), which awarded the Afe Babalola Medical Students Association (AMSA) an award as the youngest most active Medical Students’ Association,
also elected the Medical Students’ Association of this great and prestigious institution (ABUAD) as the Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS, that also happens to be the very first time a Medical Students Association from a private University is getting elected…yet another milestone accomplished.

The Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SOCRA) is one of the six standing committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations’ (IFMSA). Within SCORA, medical students from all over the world work on issues concerning Reproductive and Sexual health and this can be through advocacy work, projects, or through peer education, SCORA works on the local, national, and international levels to get its message across. 

Reproductive health is a very wide subject, ranging from sexual rights, to women's health and HIV/AIDS. However, the international Body of SCORA just last year decided to focus on 5 main areas within the field of reproductive health: (1). Comprehensive Sexuality Education (2). Violence against Women (3) Maternal Health (4). Access to Safe Abortion (5). HIV/AIDS: Its prevention, Stigma and Discrimination.

As a result, the ABUAD team for SCORA, as the National representatives for SCORA in Nigeria, is out to make sure that our impact is felt right here in ABUAD, in other parts of the country and the World at large through the different programs that have been scheduled for this year. These include: Online Debates, Campaign against issues such as rape, child molestation and the rest, International seminar against Gender inequalities, Village outreaches and so on.
